Safeguarding through our curriculum
Safeguarding is a fundamental pillar embedded at the root of our core curriculum, reflecting our commitment to providing a secure and nurturing learning environment for all pupils. Our approach to safeguarding extends beyond a set of policies, it is an integral part of the content we teach. We recognise that creating a safe and supportive space is essential for effective learning, and as such, safeguarding principles are interwoven into every aspect of curriculum. Here is an overview of how we explore and prioritise safeguarding:
Explicit teaching of safeguarding through our core curriculum
PSHE (Personal, Social, Health & Economic Education)
Our PSHE curriculum is thoughtfully crafted to encompass a broad spectrum of safeguarding principles, ensuring that our pupils develop a well-rounded understanding and skill-set for their personal well-being and safety. Within this framework, the curriculum comprehensively addresses key aspects such as mental health, physical well-being, body boundaries, online safety, economic well-being, anti-bullying, and identity. Computing
One reason we have chosen to follow the National Centre of Computing Education (NCCE) scheme is because of its comprehensive integration of online safety. Unlike approaches where online safety may be treated as a stand-alone or tokenistic element, the NCCE scheme of work ensures that online safety is intricately woven into every single topic taught in Computing. It recognises that in the present day, online safety is not a separate concern but an integral aspect that should permeate every facet of computing education. This approach not only enhances our pupils’ understanding of responsible digital citizenship but also empowers them to navigate the online world with confidence and awareness across all computing topics, including:

Religious Education
Our RE curriculum (Agreed Redbridge Syllabus) is designed not only to impart knowledge about diverse religious beliefs but also to encompass elements of safeguarding, British Values and serves as an early intervention strategy. Here are explanations of how these elements are integrated:

Exploring safeguarding through our English curriculum
In our English lessons, the theme of safeguarding is thoughtfully explored through a range of carefully selected books. These books serve as powerful vehicles for implicit discussions on safety, well-being, and societal responsibility. The exploration of safeguarding in our English curriculum is multifaceted.
Here are some examples:
Beyond our core curriculum
We are always looking for ways to explore safeguarding beyond our core curriculum. Here are some examples of how we have achieved this:
- Body Boundaries and Consent Workshop for Years 5 and 6 delivered by our EWO
- The '2 Johns' Online Safety workshops for all pupils, staff and parents
- Anti-Bullying workshops for all pupils delivered by an ex-student during anti-bullying week
- Bikeablity workshops for pupils that emphasise the importance of Road Safety
- Visits from the local police with a focus on anti-social behaviour and local crime prevention
- Visits from our local fire department
Each Year group has also strategically mapped out how safeguarding, SMSC and the British Values are explored through other areas of our core curriculum.
